A Stroke of “Ladybug” Luck

ladybugblogEver since I watched “Under the Tuscan Sun” several years ago, I’ve believed that ladybugs bring good luck. Before, I never much thought about it.

The ladybug has many ideologies attached to it. According to Ask.com, “A ladybug historically symbolizes good fortune. In the middle ages, aphids attacked crops and the farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. A short time later, ladybugs arrived and killed all the bugs. The Swiss used to tell their children that ladybugs, not storks, bring babies. Some people, even today, believe that if a ladybug lands on you, you’re in for some good luck.”

Additionally, it is thought that ladybugs are a good omen. They can symbolize many things, from a change in luck, to finding true love, to getting a wish you’ve asked to be granted. However, killing a lady bug can result in a turn of bad luck.

This finally brings me to my story.

In our home we’ve lived in for the last nine months, there are many ladybugs that grace us. I have found some in the office, a couple in the family room, one or two in the hallway near the stairs, and even one on the wall near the kitchen. We have not been inundated by them; they just appear here and there, and we never kill them. We always gently pick each one up and guide her outside near the bench on our front porch, where she may live in harmony with nature and not suffer the consequences of being indoors for too long. We take great comfort in knowing they got warm for a bit, but they need the nourishment from the outdoors to survive.

I feel certain that these little ladybugs are a stroke of good luck for us. My daughter loves ladybugs, and she and I have taken to “rescuing” each little one. We’re lucky to be able to do so.

What do you think brings your home good luck?
