Saying Some ‘Thank Yous’ This Thanksgiving Season: A Reflection
Thoughts and a Reflection on Thanksgiving In my humble opinion, the best four days of the year have just passed. The four days of Thanksgiving weekend are always my favorite time of the year. We are permitted to just stop and reflect for a few days, spend time with family, and in our home, begin the Christmas traditions we set forth when the kids were babies of cutting down our Christmas tree and decorating for the holidays. For the last several years, I’ve cooked the Thanksgiving dinner, with sides provided by my mother and mother-in-law. This year, the pumpkin pie and apple crumb pie were ordered from Kirsten’s Cakery by…

Giving Thanks To You
Yes, it’s that time of the year. Time to be thankful for people and blessings. As it’s officially Thanksgiving holiday break for me, I’d like to take a moment to thank you, the readers and supporters of Steph’s Scribe. If it weren’t for readers, we bloggers wouldn’t be doing what we do. From the days when we wrote in journals and didn’t have the vehicle to share our thoughts or ideas, it’s wonderful to have that access through this platform; I’m thankful for the opportunity and take my responsibility of writing for you seriously. It’s an outlet for me, I take great pride in it, and I never want to…

With Thanksgiving around the corner, I am thankful for my family who always encourages me to continue with my passion. It’s important to have a good support system around you when you tackle something as big as a novel. And it’s wonderful to have people who support you, even though it’s a time-consuming endeavor. The three have never met before. One has claustrophobia, one is exhausted and…

Thankfulness, Doug Flutie, and The Power of Love
The scent of a familiar cologne wafting into the room. An old song playing on the radio. The smell of spaghetti sauce cooking on the stove, the aroma of garlic filling the air. A black and white photograph of your great-grandparents and grandparents in a photo album together, smiling. These things remind us of people, and so… Thanksgiving is coming, and it’s a time to stop and be grateful. To count our blessings in a world that at times seems dark and gloomy. It’s a time to be thankful for what is now at present. But it’s also a time to be thankful for things that were. For relationships that…

Caution: I Pause For Happiness
* * * I actually heeded this advice for the past four days. There were several times when I paused this Thanksgiving weekend and looked around me, as if my eyes were a camera recording the moment. I didn’t want to forget this particular holiday weekend. I wanted to keep it for all times in that wonderful place called my memory. I took in sights, sounds, and smells. Some might say our Thanksgiving table had few people sitting around it. I hosted the dinner, and there were only eight of us: my immediate family, my parents, and my husband’s parents. I would say that it’s not the number of people…

Thankfulness: Today’s Wednesday Wisdom
* * * Right now, I have an apple pie in the oven, a turkey thawing in water because it’s still too frozen and I started to panic, and children who have been so helpful today around the house as we prepare to entertain for Thanksgiving. No matter how that turkey turns out, we will all be together tomorrow, and that’s really all that matters. Today’s words of wisdom come from Meister Eckhart, who was a German theologian, philosopher and mystic, born near Gotha, in the Holy Roman Empire. He lived from 1260 until 1328, and his insight on being thankful is so beautifully put. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! If the…

What To Do When Your Momma Gives You The Bird: How To Cook A “Melt-In-Your-Mouth” Turkey
I can take absolutely no credit for this—absolutely no credit whatsoever. It’s my mother’s recipe, and this year I will be attempting it for the first time. Thanksgiving is at our house, and I’m the chef. But I’m kind of a thief, as well, because I’m totally stealing her recipe. I wouldn’t cook a turkey any other way. My mother’s turkeys are always outstanding. Truthfully, I’m not really a thief at all. My mother wrote out the recipe for me, so she’s clearly an enabler. She wants it done right for her sake, and the sake of all the guests. No one wants to eat a dry, flaky bird. I’m…

Mimosa Trees & Christmas Trees: A Letter From A Reader
This morning, I thought I’d share a letter I received from a reader. Dear Stephanie, I read your novel, “Beneath the Mimosa Tree,” and enjoyed it from the first page to the last. It’s such a perfect read for this time of year! While your title reflects something that happened “under the tree,” I wanted to tell folks who haven’t read the book what a perfect time of year it is to read this novel. It takes place primarily in the fall season, and moves through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. The sweetness of the characters as the plot unfolds makes it a perfect book to cuddle up with as…

De-Cluttering & Purging
It’s Saturday morning, and all my Halloween decorations are neatly tucked into two orange containers ready for storage in the basement. I do this every year—put them away immediately after, so that in about 25 days I’ll be ready to put out the Christmas decorations. Yes. It’s true. We are the family that cuts down our tree at the farm the day after Thanksgiving. Here’s my logic on it: If I’m going to go through all the trouble to decorate my house, throw parties, and entertain, then I want the decorations up for a while to appreciate them. My decorations do not linger past January 1. They all typically come…

The Top Ten Things A Cunning Turkey Would Say To Escape His Obligation
As we count down to Thanksgiving, here are our ideas for what a cunning turkey would say to weasel his way out of his Thanksgiving obligation. Special thanks to my friend, Jenny, for the assistance with this silly blog post. My son can’t bear to think of the turkey’s supreme sacrifice… *** 10. “Don’t look at me! I’m not the one who consistently wakes up everyone at the crack of dawn!” 9. “I’m not a turkey; I’m a chicken.” 8. “There a strange glaze in your eyes when you hold that knife…sort of like Norman Bates in ‘Psycho.'” 7. “Look! Quick! Over there! It’s Santa Claus!” 6. “I’m not a…
