The Witch’s Memories | Friday Fiction
The Witch gathered up her things—the cauldron, the potion mixer, the wide-brimmed hat—and stepped over the woman she had just put into a deep sleep. The Witch left the woman lying on her back on the carpet, her form in an unattractive spread eagle position in her yoga attire, a bit of her belly flopping out of the waist of her pants. The truth of the matter was, the sleeping woman used to be her friend. Not any longer, however. The Witch did not care for her at all. It had finally come to that. The woman could never be trusted, and The Witch had been used for the…

The Prettiness of White Pumpkins
* * * Even though it’s fall and the leaves on the East Coast trees are starting to change into the traditional colors of yellows, oranges, and browns, a splash of white among the mix doesn’t hurt. Pumpkins, typically known for being orange in color, can also be white. This season, I’ve been looking to try some different fall crafts with my daughter, especially as autumn is upon us. We still get into the spirit of Halloween at our house even though my kids are older, and we host Thanksgiving dinner. I enjoy trying new centerpieces or decorations to freshen up our look. I love the idea of white pumpkins…

De-Cluttering & Purging
It’s Saturday morning, and all my Halloween decorations are neatly tucked into two orange containers ready for storage in the basement. I do this every year—put them away immediately after, so that in about 25 days I’ll be ready to put out the Christmas decorations. Yes. It’s true. We are the family that cuts down our tree at the farm the day after Thanksgiving. Here’s my logic on it: If I’m going to go through all the trouble to decorate my house, throw parties, and entertain, then I want the decorations up for a while to appreciate them. My decorations do not linger past January 1. They all typically come…

Countdown to Halloween: Three Films That Haunted Me
*** Can you remember the very first film you saw that scared you? I mean really scared you? For example, perhaps after you saw it you had to sleep with the lights on or keep a baseball bat next to your bed? I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours… The first one for me was “Dracula” with Bela Lugosi. I was probably about eight and my elementary school would show Saturday morning movies in our school’s cafeteria on a screen with a projector. Anyone was welcome to come, and I remember walking up to the school, sitting on the floor cross-legged, and watching the film. “Dracula” was made…

Spiders, Snakes, and Charlotte: Oh, My! The Death of a Spider
Then Last week, there was a spider in our garage. My daughter screamed when she saw it. “Daddy! Mommy! Can you sweep that dead spider out of the garage! It’s huge!” she exclaimed. My husband was inside, so I took a peek at the thing, though I, like many of you, am not a fan of arachnids. As I was reminded last year when my son was studying for a science test, arachnids are not insects. Arachnids have eight legs and two body parts; insects have six legs, three body parts, and typically have wings as well. Nevertheless, the point I am attempting to make is that this arachnid was…
