Christmas Supper Club
Last night, our friends Jackie and Matt hosted our final Supper Club dinner of the year. It’s always so nice to get together around Christmas, eat some delicious homemade food, drink some Christmas spirits, and share quality time with our friends. In fact, we knew how much fun we were having when all of a sudden we looked at the clock and said, “It’s almost midnight!” Time certainly does fly when you’re having fun. We’ve been getting together for over two years now; approximately every other month, each couple takes turns hosting at their home. The couple who hosts makes the main course and provides some drinks, and everyone else…

Fictography #6 — Captain’s Crap
/FICTOGRAPHY/ def. — The intersection of photography (submitted by readers) and fiction (written by me!). This week’s selected photograph comes from my college roommate, former colleague, and dearest friend Elizabeth Johnson. She sent me this picture of a dog named Captain, and I simply couldn’t resist. I needed a little break from the romantic stuff and will save next week’s post for some Valentine love. For now, Elizabeth’s photo of this dog is so cute, I couldn’t help but make him a little snarky. * * * Fictography #6 — Captain’s Crap Honestly, don’t take pity on me. I’ve been fine and I’ll be fine. It’s just that sometimes I…

My Husband’s Other Favorite Christmas Cookie
So in reverse order today, I’ll be showcasing a recipe first, and then a stylish fashion look. * * * We had a good laugh about it last night. My husband found it hilarious that I was blogging about his favorite Christmas cookie. But, of course, in typical fashion, he second-guessed me. “Are you sure that’s my favorite cookie?” he asked. “Yes. You * love them,” I said. (Note: the * stands for an expletive I used before the word love.) “But there are also those mint chocolate chips…they are to die for too,” he said. “So, are you going to be taking over my blog? We could rename it…

Fashion Friday & Food: Carrie Bradshaw ‘Romantic’ Style
* * * Today’s Fashion Look: The Romantic Style Years ago, when I was moonlighting as a fashion stylist, I would facilitate short seminars. I categorized women into four categories, primarily using the women from “Sex and the City” as examples. It’s an easy way to figure out what type of dress you prefer–and what you wear well. The four types are as follows: The Natural (as depicted by Miranda): Simple lines, natural fabrics, low on accessories, comfortable clothing. The Classic (as depicted by Charlotte): Pretty, classic, sometimes preppy & structured lines. Pearls and diamonds. Think Audrey Hepburn. The Romantic (as depicted by Carrie): Flirty, feminine clothes, that match, but…

What To Do When Your Momma Gives You The Bird: How To Cook A “Melt-In-Your-Mouth” Turkey
I can take absolutely no credit for this—absolutely no credit whatsoever. It’s my mother’s recipe, and this year I will be attempting it for the first time. Thanksgiving is at our house, and I’m the chef. But I’m kind of a thief, as well, because I’m totally stealing her recipe. I wouldn’t cook a turkey any other way. My mother’s turkeys are always outstanding. Truthfully, I’m not really a thief at all. My mother wrote out the recipe for me, so she’s clearly an enabler. She wants it done right for her sake, and the sake of all the guests. No one wants to eat a dry, flaky bird. I’m…

The Three “C’s” of the Holidays—Christmas, Calories, and Carbs
*** I can already feel my waistline expanding. Just looking at holiday recipes and cookies that are about to explode onto the scene are making my thighs jiggle. This is a frightening time of year, and nobody wants to take the time to count calories and discover how many carbs she’s ingested in one day. It’s daunting. But alas, we’ve got to keep watch over it, otherwise we’ll be one of those “pretenders” and “false exercise enthusiasts” who show up at the YMCA on January 2, only to fall off the wagon by January 14. We let the weight pile on and then we’re desperate to get it off. (I’ve…
