Watch Your Step, Distracted Walking Can Cause an Injury

    March 22, 2022 /

Yesterday on my ride to work, I learned some startling statistics about distracted walking. The ironic part of the study are the statistics, that go something like this: In the United States, 78% of adults believe that distracted walking is a “serious” issue. But the humorous part is that they believe it’s the “other people” who are committing this hazard. Only 29% of those polled said that they, themselves, do it, too. From AAOS.ORG Additionally, 4 out of 10 people say they have watched a distracted walking incident happen, and 26% of people admit to having been in a walking accident themselves. Truthfully, this is no laughing matter. In fact,…

  • 7 Tips for Working From Home During This Unusual Time

    March 20, 2020 /

*** I shared a variation of this post a couple of years ago, and I thought it might be appropriate to revamp it now with so many of us working from home during the current coronavirus crisis. As someone who has an office on campus, but also works from home, I can tell you that it is often challenging to work from home, especially as others are working from home as well. Right now, my son is upstairs on Zoom listening to lectures from Widener University; my husband is on conference calls regarding business at the Orioles; my daughter is working on her sign language project, learning new vocabulary words;…

    February 3, 2020 /

Today’s Podcast #5 covers the need to clear your head before beginning a new project, along with the reasons to clear your workspace. I touch on these two motivators and then roll right into deciding how your narrative is going to take hold. Which point of view is right for your story? Sharing some thoughts on that and why you should think about this now…to avoid a lot of additional reworking down the road. Enjoy! Her character-driven books are typically set in Maryland to…

  • Walking Spawns Creativity

    June 4, 2017 /

*** The ritual for me of a Sunday late afternoon walk is the perfect way to generate creativity. All you writers out there know what I’m talking about, right? The ability to unplug, listen to the birds, and regenerate from stress while burning a few calories helps us become more creative. I do some of my best creative thinking and strategizing during this time. Late afternoon is my favorite time of day…and I love walking in my neighborhood. Who else is a walker and does his or her best thinking on your feet? 👟👟 Getting in touch with nature and decompressing helps you recenter and look at things with a…

    June 10, 2016 /

*** It’s 1:35 p.m. on a sunny, gorgeous Friday here in Maryland where the temps are a stunning 79 degrees, and I’ve just returned from an hour-long walk. There are no excuses when the weather is this spectacular. As someone who admittedly has not taken very good care of herself over the last few years and has put other things and other people first, I’ve committed the summer to my overall physical and mental well-being. From reading to writing to exercising daily and eating better, it’s time for me to get serious about my lifestyle. I’m not hear to preach about your health; Weight Watchers, your doctor, and your own…
