Conversations With My Daughter
Several years ago, I would write posts about conversations I had with my daughter, Ellie, when she was younger. Some of them are hilarious, like when she thought I was actually having breakfast with Michael Buble and when she told me women could be anything they wanted, just not priests. I’ve provided some links to those conversations at the bottom of this post. She’s always had a pretty funny sense of humor and a good wit. She’s also incredibly strong-willed, and has been since the day I gave birth to her, a horror story in itself, because she was a stubborn little thing who didn’t want to pop out and…

9 Schmoozing Techniques for Networking
In the world of business communication, we do a lot of schmoozing. It’s not a bad word; it’s not taboo—it’s what we do. We have to know how to mingle with finesse. It’s the art of schmoozing, and I think Urban Dictionary defines it best as: Talk that is business oriented, designed to both provide and solicit personal information but avoids overt pitching. Most often an artifact of ‘networking.’ So there you have it. Now, how do you execute the schmooze like a pro? I’ve done enough schmoozing over the years to offer a few pointers, especially for recent graduates, soon-to-be graduates, or those coming back in the game or…

A Conversation With My Friend That I Hope You’ll Remember
* * * At one point during my girls night out last evening, I completely lost it. I ended up crying. Tears were running down my face as I tried desperately to catch my breath. The conversation that preceded my behavior went something like this: I was talking about a place—going to a place—and Jenny said, “Wait … I think I worked there.” “You did?” “I think I did. Way back when, but I’m not sure.” “You’re not sure you worked there?” “I either worked there, or I had some strange dream that I worked there. I can’t remember.” “You can’t remember if you worked at a place?” It was…

Breakfast With Michael Buble
This morning I was getting ready to go out the door. I was dressed casually, but nicely enough that my daughter knew I wasn’t going to be home working at the computer all day. “Where are you going this morning?” she asked me as she was getting her breakfast together. “Out for breakfast,” I said. “Who are you going with?” she asked. “You’ll never guess it,” I said. She looked at me, mulled it over. “Michael Buble?” she said. I laughed. She is so funny and knows my affinity for Mr. Buble. Don’t ask me why it was top of mind for her this morning, but even as I’m writing…

Conversations with My Daughter
I try to limit the amount of stories I tell about my kids or my family, but I couldn’t hold this one back. This morning’s dialogue between my daughter and me made me realize I had to write this down. Sometimes the conversation is so poignant, it makes its own little story. I also decided to post a second conversation that took place between the two of us back in November. I want to remember these stories and her, in particular, at this age. She’s nine. *** The Bills This morning my daughter and I were getting ready to go to school; she was heading to her elementary school to…
