copyright 2024, Mimosa Publishing
It’s 1956, and rumors begin to swirl: the Brooklyn Dodgers may leave New York for California. As a prominent feature writer for The News, Veronica DeMarco is beginning to realize her dreams, because she also just signed a book deal with a publisher. After the death of their mother, Veronica took on the responsibility of caring for her older sister, Essie, who suffers from polio. When Veronica is introduced to Perry Spada, the new sportswriter who covers the Dodgers, they fall in love. But things are never simple. When Robert Barone, the editor of The News and an old family friend, assigns Veronica a story about Rosa Manetti, New York’s infamous, incarcerated mafia dame, Veronica not only shares Rosa’s sad and tumultuous story, but also uncovers secrets about her own family that have been kept from her all her life. These secrets create a toxic relationship between Veronica and Essie, one that may not be reparable. Moreover, Veronica learns that she and Rosa Manetti may not be so different after all.
The Ones Closest to You is historical women’s fiction that dives into themes of family secrets, toxic relationships, envy, love, faith, and the surprising people who come into our lives as saving graces. Set in New York City between 1956 and 1957, the story unfolds with historical moments that accentuate the time period, along with added twists and turns, including mentions of people and places of the time, as well as a couple of interactions with Yankees great Mickey Mantle.
